Kettling (also known as containment) is unquestionably terrifying.
The logic is to surround a crowd of people with police to “contain” them. By contain, I mean giving everyone in the crowd, peaceful or angry, 1 option: To do what the police tell them to in order to get out. It takes the power away from the crowd and places it in the force of the police surrounding them.
During peaceful G20 protests, the Toronto Police Force saturated Queen and Spadina using this tactic. No one was allowed to leave. People were offering themselves up to be arrested just to get out because it was cold & wet and some people had mental health issues that were affected.
When laws are made, they govern society. Which is why I feel an overwhelming sense of confusion when I hear people try and segregate themselves from what’s happening with the Protesters. The laws inflicted upon them, extend beyond just them. No matter our nature in a moment, peaceful or chaotic. We’re all being contained and governed. Sitting at home, in a boardroom or, at a protest. Rights and Freedoms, are OUR rights and freedoms.
Sitting back and watching it all be governed in black and white, when human nature is nothing of the sort…has grown tiring for many.
